Former champion Maria Sharapova continued her comeback from shoulder surgery with an impressive opening win in the US Open first round.
She beat Bulgaria’s Tsvetana Pironkova 6-3 6-0 in 73 minutes to reach the second round Tuesday.
“I played a very tricky opponent that didn’t give me much room and I’m also coming from a pretty slow court in Toronto, so it was just about adjusting,” the 2006 US Open champion said.
